How useful are such cannons?

For smoke cannons, Cheminees are by far the best in terms of range and piercing power. Smoke shot in general is very good as a support skill. There is a ship skill called special smoke bomb that will cancel the enemy's skills with a critical 100% of the time and on broadsides at a much lower rate. There is also a smoke status effect that you inflict which lowers the damage dealt by the enemy also. So yea smoke cannons are pretty good.
