I find southeast veracruz large boulder landmark only slightly inferior to gulf of mexico SW coast, the benefit of course being that it's town outskirts.

Portobelo outskirts. outside the gate head right to a rather close table boulder. Pretty decent spot. Crickets, corn, potato, grass, and berries too.

Giant dead tree Northwest Malacca. Kept getting these when I tried to procure Sweet Potatoes.

I found that the best place to procure these, if you're after them specifically, is actually Amazon River Upstream, by the Giant Dead Tree near the middle.

This is because in that area one can only procure rocks, grass and these fruit. Therefore, while I still seem to be getting the same ratio of "good" items vs junk, the "good" ones are only those I need (and not cactuses, potatoes, corn etc.)

Well that is actually very inaccurate, Dead Tree in Amazon Upstream drops Cacao,Pineapples,Peanuts,Tobacco,Large Leaves,Bark,Rocks and Grass, no Exotic Fruit there at all
